About this calculator

Weighted GPA gives extra grade-point value to more demanding courses. This calculator uses a common model: Standard courses receive no bonus, Honors courses add 0.5 points, and AP/IB courses add 1.0 point, with a maximum course value of 5.0.

How to use it

  1. Add each course and choose the letter grade earned.
  2. Choose Standard, Honors or AP / IB for the course level.
  3. Enter course credits and compare your weighted and unweighted GPA estimates.

How weighted GPA works

On this calculator, an A is worth 4.0 in a Standard course, 4.5 in an Honors course and 5.0 in an AP or IB course. Credit-bearing courses have more influence when they carry more credits.

Weighted vs unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA measures grades on the same 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA can reward students for taking harder classes, which is why it can be higher than 4.0.

There is no single universal weighted GPA scale. Schools may use different bonuses, caps, eligible courses or weighting rules. Always compare the result with your school's official policy.
