The basic GPA formula is:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits
Step 1: Convert each letter grade to grade points
On a common unweighted 4.0 scale, A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0. Plus and minus grades often use values such as 3.7 for A− and 3.3 for B+.
Step 2: Multiply grade points by credits
If you earn an A in a 3-credit course, that course contributes 4.0 × 3 = 12 quality points. A B in a 4-credit course contributes 3.0 × 4 = 12 quality points.
Step 3: Divide by total credits
Those example courses produce 24 quality points across 7 credits, giving a GPA of about 3.43.
